Krome Avenue: Where Miami Ends
One intersection marks the edge of the city. Our airboats launch right there.
Drive west on SW 8th Street long enough and you’ll reach a clear dividing line. At Krome Avenue, the suburbs end and the Everglades begin. This corner, known as Dade Corners, is where our airboat tours start.
Who was Krome?
Krome Avenue is named after William J. Krome, a railroad engineer for Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway who surveyed routes through South Florida and helped develop farming in the region. Today the road (State Road 997) runs about 37 miles along the western side of Miami-Dade, from Homestead north toward the Broward County line.
The edge of the city
Miami-Dade County has an Urban Development Boundary, a planning line meant to keep most new development away from the Everglades and farmland. Here in the west, that’s why the change is so sudden. On one side of Krome Avenue are neighborhoods and shopping. On the other are sawgrass, canals and open sky.
What’s at the corner
The biggest landmark here is the Miccosukee Casino & Resort, owned by the Miccosukee Tribe. It opened in 1999 and its hotel tower is visible from a long way off. Nearby is the Pilot Travel Center, and that’s where you’ll find us.
Finding our dock
Our airboats launch at 17696 SW 8 St, Miami, FL 33194, inside the Pilot Travel Center at Dade Corners. From here, tours head out into the Everglades and the Everglades and Francis S. Taylor Wildlife Management Area. You don’t have to drive another mile of highway to be on the water.
Skip the drive. We pick you up.
